Polished Stainless Steel Characteristics
Stainless steel is a mixture containing a minimum of 10% chromium, which helps to prevent corrosion. This is an invisible film layer that covers the steel’s surface, creating a barrier. If corrosion happens to occur, it will be on the surface rather than within the internal structure.
Initial signs of corrosion are tiny pits and cracks in the steel that later cause red-orange rust, which will increase in size overtime if prevention steps are not taken. It is important to keep your stainless steel clean because you cannot see these tiny pits and cracks at first. The passive film layer of chromium will deteriorate if steel pads or wire brushes scratch the surface. Hard water mineral deposits left on the surface, food particles, table salt and chlorides in household cleaners will additionally break down the protective layer. Stainless steel is durable if it’s taken care of and maintenance is regularly practiced.
Stainless steel does not corrode or rust easily, hence its other industry name, corrosion-resistant steel or CRES. It does not rust as easily as natural carbon steel itself. There are over 150 grades of stainless steel and many finishes that are applied over top to protect the surfaces. When nickel is added to the mixture of steel, it becomes less fragile and non-magnetic. It is a popular material due to its resistance to corrosion, low cost and low maintenance. Another great quality of stainless steel is it's 100% recyclable.
Polished Stainless Steel
Polished stainless steel is one of the finishes we offer for bar rest tubing and components. Polished stainless steel has a very shiny, mirror finish that reflects a lot of light. Unfortunately, since this polish finish is reflective, it will reveal and draw attention to any imperfections in the steel. Be sure to follow maintenance tips to keep your polished steel rails in top shape.
